FIRST SNOW OF THE NEW YEAR- ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE

Snow on the tree branches, snow on the mountainside, snow down in the valley.

Snow in the southern Appalachian Mountains on January 7, 2010. It's still here on Jan. 8th, in fact, the temperature has been below freezing since January 2nd.

Through my window, a woodpecker goes for the suet.

Your photos look like mine, even the flicker on the suet feeder.
while it is cold here, I love being all closed in all day and I am grateful to have a warm house and plenty of heat - gas and electric.
I'm even doing some writing.

Burr, even your photos look cold. We're in warm sunny Florida only it's not sunny and it definitely not warm. Big worries about the strawberry and orange crops around here.

But we have nothing to complain about when we look around and see the conditions across the country and in Europe.

Stay warm,
Sam

Nancy, love the dog sleeping. I've a big white/butter colored one just to my left. And a fire in the hearth. So glad to hear that things are moving along with Carolina Wren.

Kay, That is Sasha, my part wolf dog, cover girl dog. I wanted to post the first snow of the new year and Basho's haiku. I think Sasha knew that, so she laid down by the heater and posed for me.

Nancy,
I knew the snow would be beautiful up on your mountain. The photos are splendid. I can just imagine how much your enjoyed the snow from your home.

I am so jealous! All this cold, and I have yet to see a single snowflake at my house. Your outdoor photos are ALWAYS wonderful; your indoor ones make me want to curl up with a cup of tea and a good book!

Hello Jayne, I wish you could see my mountain. I took some amazing pictures of the snow this evening at sunset, four days after the snow fell. Only a small amount has melted.
